Description

The differentiating architecture of PHD Virtual’s esXpress is its use of Linux Virtual Backup Appliances (VBAs) to offload I/O tasks. These VBAs run outside of the service console, power on only when a backup task is underway, and then lay dormant again. A lightweight installation of the esXpress management software is installed on the service console of each VMware ESX Host. This software manages the backup schedule, deploys the VBAs, and performs other non-intensive management tasks.

esXpress was created from the ground up to integrate directly with VMware ESX and runs natively without requiring VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB).

Throttling – esXpress harnesses innovative throttling techniques which allow disk throttling to be applied during production hours to ensure the SAN will not be overloaded if backup jobs overrun. Each VBA can be throttled individually to use the maximum MB/sec.

Scalability – The distributed backup architecture of esXpress is extremely scalable both vertically (by adding more VBAs per Host) and horizontally (by adding more hosts). This flexible approach allows for backup infrastructure expansion to meet increased demand without requiring a redesign of the underlying virtual infrastructure

Fault Tolerance – Because the VBAs run independently on each host, esXpress has no single point of failure. In the event of a host failure, VMs that are successfully migrated to another host (using VMware HA) are backed up during the backup window.

De-duplication Appliance new! – Not all de-duplication technologies are created equal—the PHD ‘de-dupe’ appliance contains patent-pending technologies making it architecturally superior to competing software solutions. esXpress version 3.6 provides optional source-side storage de-duplication using a de-duplication virtual appliance. This consists of a single target VM which processes, indexes and administers the backup target. De-duplication results in significant savings in disk space and network bandwid
