It has a homepage with documentation about installation, possible problems and configuration so that it can be useful in a production environment and for Windows users wanting to try Linux. If the host is online the virtual Ubuntu is ready to install software from 26000 free packages of the Ubuntu repositories. Passwords, a complete documentation of the installation process and a readme file are included in the zip-file.

This appliance was built from scratch using debootstrap and adding a virtual kernel. Doing it this way leaves you with only the bare essentials which is a perfect base to build a virtual appliance on but with all the ubuntu software ready to be installed!

It has VMware tools installed by adding build-essential and linux-headers and compiling the needed modules. Then the disk was cleaned using apt-get autoremove and stripping the vmware tools directory from the unneeded binaries and 64-bit files (leaving 30MB instead of 150MB).

Mandriva Linux 2009.0 Alpha 2 (GNOME)

This alpha introduces several significant changes, most obviously the inclusion of KDE 4 - 4.1 beta 2, specifically - as the default version of KDE, and the latest development version of GNOME, 2.23.4. The kernel has also been updated to release 2.6.26rc7. We emphasize that the KDE change is a major one that is not yet entirely completed and likely to cause many bugs. As always - but more importantly than ever - we remind you not to use pre-releases in any critical situation; install them only on a test system or partition, or in a virtual machine. Additionally, we strongly discourage using this pre-release to upgrade from any earlier release of Mandriva Linux, as the transition process from KDE 3 to KDE 4 is not yet fully implemented and you are likely to end up with an unusable system.

Avamar Virtual Edition

EMC Avamar has introduced the first virtualized data protection solution for backup and recovery and disaster recovery in the industry. The Avamar Virtual Edition (AVE) is a single-node Avamar server that runs as a virtual machine in any 3.X VMware ESX-server environment. The AVE is similar to existing single-node Avamar offerings on physical machines, in that it runs autonomously as a target for Avamar client backups. The Avamar software product utilizes patented data de-duplication and single instance storage (SIS) technology to backup data once and only once on a global basis. The Avamar Virtual Edition is ideal for branch office data consolidation environments, and comes in a .5 terabyte and 1.0 terabyte capacity.

The primary benefit from the Avamar Virtual Edition is that it allows customers to virtualize the complete backup and recovery process - as well as facilitating easy remote copies for disaster recovery. For customers who are standardizing on VMware, this means that they can now include all parts of an efficient, de-duplicated backup infrastructure within their remote office virtual environments, and standardize on Avamar as part of the virtual template that's used in the provisioning process. This assures consistency, uniformity & a rapid, cost-effective rollout. Since the Avamar Virtual Edition can be deployed right next to other VMware virtual machines running on existing physical hardware, customers can further leverage their investment in shared server and storage infrastructure. And finally, Avamar's integrated replication capabilities can be used to assure that a second copy of backups stored on the Virtual Edition are available at another location for DR purposes. The second target location can be either another Avamar Virtual Edition or a physical Avamar implementation.

The Avamar Virtual Edition expands the capabilities of virtualization beyond just business applications, and delivers an unparalleled reduction in management and infrastructure costs for companies that currently deploy or play to deploy VMware infrastructures across all remote office environments.

Key Benefits:

Time to Market: Organizations that are currently deploying or wish to deploy standardized virtualized IT infrastructures in remote offices can now simplify and streamline the data protection infrastructures as part of the virtualized solution.

Efficiency: The AVE virtualized data protection schema for remote offices provides cost effective and efficient backup and recovery capabilities using existing VMware infrastructure. The built-in replication capability for disaster recovery purposes removes the burden of managing tapes that often-times results in lost data and consumer confidence.

Reliability: The Avamar Virtual Edition's replication capabilities eliminates the need to manage the off-site transport of tapes for disaster recovery purposes, and decreases the chance of lost or stolen media during the process.

Integration: Avamar Virtual Edition represents the industry's first example of the integration of data protection for backup recovery and disaster recovery into a virtualized environment, allowing organizations to maximize return on investment of their virtualized infrastructure.

NTP (Network Time) Appliance [Updated 2008_02_04]

New in update:
-More frequent polling of time servers; less jitter and time offsets
-More time servers polled
-Updated zoneinfo for Timezones (correct USA Daylight Savings Time) and other country zones
-three versions:
*ide with vmxnet
*scsi with e1000 network module
*ESX3 version tarball
*ESX3 version OVF file rar'd

Technical notes:
1) Before syncing clients via ntp (udp/tcp 123), please wait for the ntpd process to configure a stratum number.

Enable the status page and use Alt-F12 to view ntp peer status.

Wait until an asterisk ( * ), plus ( + ), or minus ( - ) symbol appears; about 2 minutes.

When this happens, the ntpd process should have configured itself with a proper stratum number and should be able to serve ntp query requests.

Description

1. This appliance will attempt to pull random ip addresses from pool.ntp.org (13 + time.nist.gov), synchronize the virtual machine clock, and start the server service for Network Time Protocol (NTP). Having correct time is important for many servers. For example, logs from Intrusion Detection Systems without proper clocks may be thrown out of court as evidence for a crime. Considering Microsoft's Active Directory and Domains, all domain controllers must have their system clocks synchronized in order for "replication" to occur. An unsynchronized domain controller will only be able to provide read-only access to Active Directory objects. Another useful scenario for this virtual appliance is the clock synchronization for all machines. The virtual appliance is able to respond to NTP queries as well as support for the Windows Operating System. Even certain phone or PBX systems, such as Avaya's IP Office, will be able to synchronize the correct time with this appliance. Cost is also a factor. Compare this free virtual machine appliance to other hardware based models. Quoting from http://www.buyntp.com/resources_buying_guide.asp, "A high quality time server costs roughly $3,000 to $10,500, depending on the level of accuracy required." The appliance is setup to be automatic and very little end-user configuration is needed. To increase security, shorewall and iptables is used to harden the appliance, only allowing NTP communications and/or Windows support.

2. Mandrivia Linux 2006 was used for the initial setup of this appliance. Only the base system was installed (no XWindows) and tools were installed for kernel compilation. In order to provide Windows support with the "net time" command, Samba was installed and setup. Throughout the course of development, new Linux kernels were released and the one currently in this appliance is kernel 2.6.16.18. The kernel was custom compiled to reduce size occupied on disk and in memory. VMtools was installed, however vmhgfs was removed since file sharing is not a desirable option. The only other module that can be compiled is vmxnet. After testing, a meticulous process of hand pruning unnecessary files was done. Then an empty virtual machine harddisk was set up to accomodate this final smaller size for the guest operating system. Files were tar'd to a backup virtual disk and untar'd to this new drive to shrink the vmdk file for final submission. A custom menu system was created to aid the end-user in managing this virtual machine, so there should be no reason to enter the "command console." If the end user wishes, a bash console is found in the custom menu.

Developed to use the fewest resources, this virtual appliance is configured to only use 24megs of RAM and 100megs of physical hard disk space.

3. An end user should just start the virtual machine normally. The appliance is configured for "first time" setup and will prompt the end user for configuration of the system.

4. Everything in this appliance is open source.

Comment on this appliance.

v1.01: this is a small update that allows the hellanzb service to be restarted from the web interface. it also includes a few small fixes (like a missing smbfs package??).

For VMware server 1.0 hosts, please download this version.

This appliance targets all users that want to download stuff from the internet whether it's music, movies or cd images. It will download everything, repair it and unpack it, put it on a fileshare and cleanup after itself. All it needs are .torrent or .nzb files to work with.

It can run in VMware player or VMware server on a Mediacenter and put the unpacked files directly in the play directory. Very easy to configure and use and no more manual labor repairing and unpacking downloaded files.

Ubuntu 7.10 JeOS v1.031 with VMware drivers (70MB)

One-line Description:
These are the bare essentials for an Ubuntu 7.10 server appliance, just 70MB in size (212 unzipped).

Size Compressed:
70

Allocated Memory:
320MB

License:
GPL

Tools?:
Yes

Torrent?:
No

Password:
root

Operating System:
Ubuntu 7.10

Applications:
Basic Ubuntu 7.10 system trimmed down.
VMware Tools basic installation.

Comment on this appliance

v1.031: this version is stripped down some more and the disksize is optimized (hence the just 70mb)

For VMware server 1.0 hosts, please download this version .

A basic Ubuntu 7.10 system is about 700MB in size. Other JeOS versions of Ubuntu 7.10 are even bigger since those have full VMware tools installed. This one has the same functionality but is only 212MB.

This appliance has been trimmed down without removing parts of packages so updating it will still work without problems. It's possible to trim it down to half it's current size if parts of packages are removed but for compatibility reasons the choice was made not to do that.

It's a perfect base to build a single purpose appliance. All unnecessary sound and USB packages and some other stuff you don't normally use in an appliance have been removed (but can be reinstalled). Some extra repositories have been added to have plenty software available to build your own appliance with this one.

Just use 'apt-get' to install whatever you need and before deploying it, do an 'apt-get clean' to clear the cache.

Users: root/root, user/user.

Geubuntu, a project started and designed by the Italian artist Luca D.M. (aka TheDarkMaster), is perfect for any Desktop, Laptop PC or even for a Virtual Machine. Geubuntu mixes the power and simplicity of Ubuntu and parts of the Gnome Desktop with the wonder and astonishing eye-candy of Enlightenment DR17.

Geubuntu will be a new experience for any user trying to run a stand-alone E17 Desktop in the past. To know exactly what Enlightenment is, we suggest you visit the Home Page of the project. On the user side, E17 appears as an incredibly nice looking Desktop Shell, composed of a Window Manager, a full set of libraries, a Desktop and a collection of modules and applications. In this stage, Enlightenment alone is not enough to make you desktop fully functional, and it's strange that so many people are especting Enlightenment to become a full Desktop Environment like Gnome, KDE or XFCE.

That's where Geubuntu comes in. Geubuntu completes the missing parts of the E17 Desktop Shell and WM with a certain number of tools and applications from the Gnome Desktop. This is only natural, after all: it would be crazy to believe that E17 should provide a full set of applications based on ETK instead of GTK!

In Geubuntu you can find a classic Ubuntu set of applications mixed with those provided and created from and for E17. You'll experience a finally usable and productive Enlightenment 0.17 Desktop, even if you are a beginner!
