Paul Maritz, President and CEO

Paul Maritz joined VMware in July 2008 as President and CEO. Prior to joining VMware, he was President of the Cloud Infrastructure and Services Division at EMC after the company’s February 2008 acquisition of Pi, where he was the founder and CEO. Before founding Pi, he spent 14 years working at Microsoft, where he served as a member of the five-person Executive Committee that managed the overall company. As Vice President of the Platform Strategy and Developer Group, among other roles, he oversaw the development and marketing of System Software Products (including Windows 95, Windows NT, and Windows 2000), Development Tools (Visual Studio) and Database Products (SQL Server) and the complete Office and Exchange Product Lines. Prior to Microsoft, he spent five years working at Intel as a software and tools developer.

Born and raised in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Paul is a graduate in Mathematics and Computer Science of the Universities of Cape Town and Natal in South Africa. He serves on the board of VMware and several privately-held software companies. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of the Grameen Foundation, which sponsors third-world development projects and provides microfinance support around the world. He has an active interest in wildlife issues and in using technology to improve life in developing countries.

Executive Officers:

Tod Nielsen, Chief Operating Officer

Tod Nielsen joined VMware in January 2009 as Chief Operating Officer. Prior to VMware, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Borland Software since November 2005. Prior to Borland, he held several key executive management positions at leading software companies including Microsoft, BEA and Oracle. Tod brings more than 20 years of leadership experience in enterprise software and application development to VMware. Prior to Borland, he served as senior vice president, marketing and global sales support for Oracle Corporation. Prior to Oracle, he was the chief marketing officer and executive vice president of engineering at BEA Systems, where he had overall responsibility for BEA’s worldwide marketing strategy and operations, as well as all research and development operations. Tod joined BEA after the acquisition of his private company, Crossgain Inc., where he served as its chief executive officer. Tod also spent twelve years with Microsoft Corporation, in various roles, including general manager of database and developer tools, vice president of developer tools, and, vice president of Microsoft’s platform group.

Richard McAniff, Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer

Richard McAniff leads research and development across VMware’s Server and Desktop Business Units. He brings more than 28 years of software development leadership experience to VMware. Most recently, Richard spent 21 years at Microsoft. As corporate vice president for Microsoft Office, he was responsible for several major software tools including Excel and Access. He also oversaw the Business Intelligence effort within Office and development of Web components for the SharePoint Portal Server. In addition, Richard helped guide the development of Office 2000, Office XP, Office 2003 and Office 2007. Before serving as corporate vice president, he served as general manager of the Visual Basic development system. Prior to joining to Microsoft in 1987, he was a member of the technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico. During his seven years there, he worked on numerous projects including probability analyses for alternative fuels. Richard holds a master's degree in systems and industrial engineering from the University of Arizona, a master's degree in resource economics from the University of Massachusetts, and a bachelor of science degree in economics from the University of Massachusetts.

Mark Peek, Chief Financial Officer

Mark Peek oversees finance at VMware. Mark has more than 25 years of industry experience. He previously held the positions of Senior Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer at Amazon.com. As Chief Accounting Officer, he oversaw the company's controllership, accounting, financial reporting and financial operations. Prior to joining Amazon.com in 2000, Mark was an audit partner at Deloitte, where he focused on technology companies and multi-national project and engagement management. Mark received a BS in accounting and international finance from Minnesota State University, where he graduated summa cum laude.

Rick Jackson, Chief Marketing Officer

Rick Jackson is responsible for worldwide marketing at VMware. He brings over 25 years of software industry experience to VMware, having held executive-level positions in marketing, sales and business development. Rick previously held chief marketing roles at Borland Software Corporation and BEA Systems. Rick brings a unique background to his role, having worked in and led engineering, field sales, business development and marketing organizations. He has also held the position of CEO and participated as a board of director member for various start-up companies in the Silicon Valley. Rick holds a B.S. degree in computer science from California State University, Northridge.

Carl Eschenbach, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Field Operations

Carl Eschenbach leads VMware field operations including sales, pre/post-sales engineering and global channel strategies. Carl has more than 20 years of experience in the high tech industry covering all aspects of technology including networking, telephony, storage and infrastructure software. Prior to joining VMware, Carl was vice president of North America Sales at Inktomi where he was instrumental in building out the North America sales, pre-sales engineering and field marketing organizations. He has also held various sales management positions with 3Com, EMC and Lucent Technologies.

Dawn Smith, Senior Vice President and General Counsel

Dawn Smith oversees VMware's worldwide legal organization. She has over 13 years of experience representing public and private companies in corporate and securities law matters. Prior to joining VMware, Dawn was a partner at Morrison & Foerster LLP and was previously an associate at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. Dawn holds a J.D. from Stanford Law School, an M.B.A. from Providence College and a bachelor's degree in economics from the U.S. Naval Academy.

General Managers:

Maurizio Carli, General Manager, EMEA

Maurizio Carli leads VMware’s Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. He is responsible for strategic planning, business operations and management of key functions for the region, including sales, channels, services and marketing. Maurizio has more than 20 years of experience in the technology industry and has expansive knowledge of the EMEA region across several technology waves and economic cycles, including in-depth experience in emerging markets. Prior to VMware, Maurizio was EMEA Managing Director for Google Enterprise. His prior roles include Senior Vice President and General Manager, EMEA for Business Objects and Vice President of the EMEA Software Group for IBM.

Andrew Dutton, General Manager, Asia Pacific and Japan

Andrew Dutton leads VMware’s Asia Pacific and Japan region. Andrew is responsible for strategic planning, business development and management of key functions for the region, including sales, channels, services, finance and marketing. Andrew brings more than 27 years of global management and sales experience across various industries, including IT and financial services. Prior to VMware, Andrew was at Computer Associates (CA) where he was Senior Vice President and General Manager of International Business, responsible for sales and business operations throughout the Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) and Asia Pacific & Japan (APJ) regions. Prior to CA, Andrew was Senior Vice President and General Manager for BEA Systems EMEA. Earlier, Andrew spent 17 years at IBM in several different senior management positions. As Vice President and General Manager for IBM Software Group Asia Pacific based in Tokyo, Andrew had responsibility for more than 3,000 software sales, marketing and support personnel across the region. Andrew holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Sydney University.

Mark Egan, Chief Information Officer

Mark Egan leads VMware’s global information technology group. Under Mark’s leadership, VMware’s IT department is focused on the effective use of IT to bring improved agility and cost savings to the business. Mark brings more than 30 years of experience in information technology to VMware, most recently serving as partner of the StrataFusion Group, an executive level consultancy. Mark served as CIO at Symantec Corporation for six years during the company’s rapid growth from a consumer publisher with $600 million revenue to the market leader of security with $5 billion revenue. During his tenure at Symantec, Mark led the information technology integration through 28 acquisitions, including a $13 billion acquisition of Veritas Software. Prior to Symantec, Mark held senior level positions at Sun Microsystems, Price Waterhouse, Atlantic Richfield Corporation, Martin Marietta Data Systems, Walden International Investment Group and Wells Fargo Bank. Mark holds a master’s degree in finance and international business from the University of San Diego and a bachelor’s degree in computer sciences from the University of Clarion.

Rich Geraffo, Vice President and General Manager, Americas

Rich Geraffo leads VMware's business and operations in the Americas. He is responsible for sales, professional services, systems engineering, channels, marketing, operations, and HR. Prior to VMware, Rich was Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales for BEA Systems. He joined BEA in 2004 as Senior Vice President, Sales Americas region, and was then promoted to run the worldwide sales organization. He was an officer of BEA and a direct report to the CEO. Prior to BEA, Rich worked for IBM as Vice President Software Sales, Americas Region. He held various leadership positions during his 15 year career at IBM which included Tivoli, Database and Enterprise Software sales. Rich holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, an MBA in Finance and is a graduate of the Stanford Executive Program.

Jocelyn Goldfein, Vice President and General Manager, Desktop Business Unit

Jocelyn Goldfein leads VMware’s desktop business unit. She is responsible for the company’s vClient initiative, which is comprised of desktop products including VMware View, VMware ThinApp, VMware Workstation and VMware Fusion. Since joining VMware in 2003, Jocelyn has played a pivotal role in scaling the product organization and launching new products for VMware. She has managed a broad set of internal groups ranging from core platform to applications to operations. Prior to VMware, Jocelyn was Director of Engineering for MessageOne; she also has worked for pcOrder, Trilogy, and Netscape. Jocelyn holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Stanford University.

Dr. Stephen Herrod, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of R&D

Stephen Herrod is responsible for VMware’s new technologies and collaborations with customers, partners and standards groups and was named CTO of the Year by InfoWorld in 2009. Stephen joined VMware in 2001 and has led the VMware ESX group through numerous successful releases. Prior to joining VMware, he was Senior Director of Software at Transmeta Corporation co-leading development of their "Code Morphing" technology. Stephen holds a Ph.D. and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Stanford University, where he worked with VMware's founders on the SimOS machine simulation project.

Raghu Raghuram, Vice President and General Manager, Server Business Unit

Raghu Raghuram leads VMware’s server business unit. He is responsible for VMware’s suite of virtual infrastructure products with a focus on the company’s Virtual Datacenter OS and related vCloud Initiatives. Since joining VMware in 2003, Raghu has held multiple roles in product management and product marketing. Most recently, he led worldwide product marketing, product management, and business planning for the virtual infrastructure, SMB, and emerging markets, as well as shared product marketing services. Prior to VMware, Raghu held product management and marketing roles at AOL, Bang Networks and Netscape. Raghu holds an MBA from the Wharton School of Business and a Master’s in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

Functional Vice Presidents:

Brian Byun, Vice President of Global Alliances

Brian Byun leads VMware’s strategic alliances, corporate development and ecosystem development teams responsible for VMware’s OEM, IHV and ISV partnerships. Brian has more than 20 years of experience delivering and marketing enterprise server and storage solutions, application middleware and Internet security software. Prior to VMware, Brian led product management for Rhapsody Networks, an intelligent storage networking venture acquired by Brocade Communications. He has also held product management, professional services, partner marketing and lead engineering roles at AOL, HP and Netscape. Brian holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dan Chu, Vice President of Emerging Products and Markets

Dan Chu leads VMware’s efforts in the areas of small and medium business, virtual appliances, and cloud computing. Previously Dan was president and co-founder of a national managed service provider focused on SMBs, and he also held roles in management consulting at Bain & Company, engineering at IBM and venture capital at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Dan has an MBA and undergraduate degree from Stanford University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

Scott Bajtos, Senior Vice President of Global Support Services

Scott Bajtos oversees VMware’s global sales support services. Scott has over 18 years of progressively expanding roles in the enterprise software and services industry, with particular focus in customer support operations, customer loyalty and maintenance sales. Prior to VMware, Bajtos worked for Business Objects, an SAP company, and served as executive vice president and chief customer satisfaction, as well as several other executive and management level positions. Before joining Business Objects, Bajtos served as vice president of Customer Care at Marimba, Inc., an Internet infrastructure management solution provider. Scott also served as vice president of the Office of Customer Advocacy at Cadence Design Systems, where he created the company’s global customer advocacy program aimed at strengthening customer loyalty while maximizing revenue and satisfaction. Bajtos holds a bachelor’s of arts degree from Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California.

Betsy Sutter, Senior Vice President of Human Resources

Betsy Sutter is responsible for human resources at VMware. Prior to this role, she was vice president of human resources for Silicon Gaming. Betsy has more than 20 years of experience in human resources management including management positions with Aehr Test Systems, Digital Equipment Corporation and General Electric/Intersil. Betsy holds a bachelor's degree in history from the University of California at Berkeley.

VMware Co-Founders:

Diane Greene (1998 – 2008)

Diane Greene was the President and CEO of VMware, Inc. Under Diane's leadership, VMware created the market for mainstream virtualization and the resulting virtualization software industry. Diane has held technical leadership positions at Silicon Graphics, Sybase and Tandem and was CEO of VXtreme. Diane's degrees include mechanical engineering, naval architecture and computer science from the University of Vermont, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California Berkeley, respectively. Diane serves on the board of Intuit and is a member of the MIT Corporation.

Dr. Mendel Rosenblum, Chief Scientist (1998 – 2008)

Mendel Rosenblum is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University, where he leads a group focused on operating systems research. Together with his students, he developed the Hive operating system, the SimOS machine simulator and the Disco virtual machine monitor. In 2002, he received the ACM SIGOPS Mark Weiser Award for his creativity, innovation and vision in operating systems research. He holds a doctorate and master's degree in computer science from the University of California at Berkeley and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Virginia.

Scott Devine, Principal Engineer (1998 – present)

Scott Devine was a Ph.D. candidate in computer science at Stanford University prior to co-founding VMware. His primary research interests are in operating systems and computer architectures, and he was a key member of the SimOS and Disco virtual machine research teams. He holds a bachelor's degree from Cornell University and a master's degree from Stanford University.

Dr. Edward Wang, Principal Engineer (1998 - 2009)

Edward Wang has more than 10 years of high tech industry experience. Prior to joining VMware, he worked as a principal engineer at VXtreme and Mindcraft and has consulted extensively on UNIX software projects. In 1993, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Usenix for his contributions to the development of Berkeley UNIX. He also helped to neutralize the infamous Internet Worm virus by discovering and describing one of its key mechanisms. He holds a doctorate and master's degree in computer science and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California at Berkeley.

Edouard Bugnion (1998 – 2004)

Edouard Bugnion was the Chief Technology Officer of VMware, Inc. He was a Ph.D. candidate in computer science at Stanford University prior to co-founding VMware. His primary research interests are in operating systems and computer architectures, and he was a key member of the SimOS and Disco virtual machine research teams. He holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from ETH Zurich and a master's degree from Stanford University.
